While New Jersey boasts over 50 wineries, it wasn’t until 2016 that the residents of the Garden State once again could indulge in hard cider for the first time since the Prohibition. Currently there are 5 hard cider makers in New Jersey with each bringing their very own special flavors and experiences to the table. So, instead of simply ranking these hard-working cider makers, I’ve decided to focus on what each one does best.

Best Traditional Hard Ciders – The Ciderhouse at Ironbound Farm

It was Ironbound Farm that led the charge of re-introducing hard cider to New Jersey when it bottled its first batch back in 2016. Since then, it has opened a beautiful Ciderhouse in Hunterdon County and remains true to owner Charles Russo’s vision of producing high quality, locally grown traditional hard ciders. Of particular note is the Harrison Heritage Collection, made from a varietal thought to be extinct in New Jersey until a lone Harrison tree was rediscovered in 1976 in Livingston. The Collection includes Ironbound Newark Cider, a blend of three 18th century Newark apples - Canfield, Graniwinkle, and Harrison, New Ark Cider Royal, a blend of Harrison cider and applejack barrel-aged in toasted oak, and finally, Harrison’s Sparkling Newark Cider, a bubbly delight with notes of pear and a smooth finish.

Ironbound Farm’s other strength is its Ciderhouse. Want a quiet romantic brunch? Step into the elegant Four Seasons Tasting Room. Feeling outdoorsy? Enjoy a stroll around the picturesque farm or simply chill out at one of their many picnic tables with your family and furbaby. Ironbound also hosts live music and other events so be sure to follow them on social media.

Armageddon Brewing Company

Best Selection – Armageddon Brewing Company

Every time I turn around, there’s Armageddon Brewing Company announcing yet another release of a new cider on its social media. Which is a great thing because it gives me an excuse to visit. Part meadery, part cidery, Armageddon isn’t afraid to experiment with new flavors while remaining true to its core ciders. The semi-dry Exile is the perfect jumping off point and from there, it’s just a matter of going drier, hoppier, fruitier, or sweeter. Remorse celebrates the sweet to tartness of blackberries while the blueberry-infused Desire holds a special place in my heart and is a must-order at every visit. After that, it’s just a matter of what new flavors are available on tap (I’m especially keen for their Habanero- infused offerings).

Somewhat hidden in an industrial complex, Armageddon’s tasting room is dog-friendly and allows you to bring your own food or order delivery. Usually, they’re playing heavy metal and their swag looks like a Megadeth album cover - bonus points! Armageddon is another must-follow on social media so you don’t miss out on their next new release.

Beach Bee Meadery
Beach Bee Meadery

Best Vibe – Beach Bee Meadery

I don’t know if it’s Beach Bee Meadery's seashore location or what, but this Long Branch meadery/cidery is just FUN. Oh, and their ciders are terrific too. This is a must-stop whenever we visit Asbury Park (it’s about 15 minutes away) and one that Domino the Winery Dog really enjoys. Dogs are allowed inside and outside and you can bring your own food or order delivery. Plus there’s Ross, Beach Bee’s friendly Golden Retriever whom Domino adores. Once we found ourselves “stuck” at Beach Bee for almost 3 hours during a thunderstorm and had a blast chatting about wine, cider, etc. with the other friendly patrons and staff.

Speaking of cider, Beach Bee not only has fruity offerings but barrel-aged and even tea-infused ones too! My go-to’s are the Blueberry Pomegranate and the Peach Cobbler but I also want to give a shout-out to the Pirate Daze Mead. It’s basically Pina Colada as a mead and it’s dazzling.

Burnt Mills Cider Company

Best Place to Soak Up the Sun – Burnt Mills Cider Company

Sun worshippers, this is your jam. Burnt Mills Cider Company has plenty of wide-open grassy spaces where you can kick back with a good book, play with Fido and the kids, picnic with friends, or simply sip on some great ciders while you take it all in. Tents and umbrellas are also welcome for those seeking refuge from the rays. I recommend bringing along some chairs as the tables fill up quite fast at this popular cidery. And if you forgot to bring food, no worries, Burnt Mills regularly hosts food trucks Thursdays through Sundays.

Naturally all this sunshine is gonna make ya thirsty and Burnt Mills more than rises to the occasion. The Semi-dry is fruit-forward with a just trace of sweetness, making it the perfect introduction to what will follow. The crisp Pear pairs perfectly with all things sunny while Beach Bonfire brings the sweet heat. Don't forget to pack the sunscreen!

Rebel Sheep Wine Company

Best Place for Families - Rebel Sheep Wine Company

Pack up the kids. Heck, bring the grandparents and the dog too because Rebel Sheep Wine Company has something for everyone! There’s a farm market, a playground, acres of green, and best of all, a winery/cidery tasting room. Talk about one-stop shopping! While the kids are sipping on juice boxes, mom and dad can indulge in their own adult fruity delights. Fruit wines may have put Rebel Sheep on the map, but let me tell you, if sweet n fruity ciders rock your world, then you’ll be in heaven. Hopposites Attract is a best of both worlds blend of cider and strawberry wine. One Hop Mess brings the zest while the peachy Sweet but Psycho tricks you with a hoppy finish. Besides offering up tasty snacks (love their pulled pork nachos!) and really cute swag, Rebel Sheep also hosts trivia nights, live music, and other events.
