Rebel Sheep Wine Company literally has something for everyone. Non-drinkers can peruse the Stony Hill Farm Market, located right next door, for fresh produce, plants, and baked goods. Children will love the large playground and there is plenty of acreage for your furbabies to stretch their legs (on leash, please). But most of all if you’re a fan of both wine and hard cider like ourselves, Rebel Sheep Wine Company is your happy place.
Unfortunately, the weather was anything but happy on the day we visited – gray, blustery, and chilly. Our bad luck continued upon entry into the tasting room where we discovered that half of the still wines were sold out. (They must be pretty darn good.) Anyway, we tasted two wines during our visit and loved them both. Peachy Green was an enchanting blend of peaches and grapes with a slight fizz at the finish. Bog Romance was one of the best cranapple wines I’ve ever tasted with a perfect tart to sweet ratio.
While we missed out on most of the wine, Rebel Sheep did have eight, quirky-named ciders for us to try. First up was Sanguine, their standard cider which was a charmingly crisp semi-dry. With a name like Sweet but Psycho, I just had to try this cider and was not disappointed. It was indeed tricky – sweet and peachy at first taste with a hoppy finish. Bloody Knuckles was a smooth-drinking dry with a nice orange finish. One Hop Mess was anything but a mess, rather a pleasantly zesty hopped cider. Aged in bourbon barrels, the bittersweet Apple-Sauced was by far Mark’s favorite of the day. With its best of both worlds blend of strawberry wine and cider, Hopposites Attract easily stole my heart.
Rebel Sheep Wine Company just celebrated their first anniversary and so far, has avoided many of the pitfalls of new wineries and cideries. The staff was personable and knowledgeable, we never felt rushed, the swag was cute, and the pulled pork nachos were scrumptious. But most of all, Domino the Winery Dog had a great time.
