Valley Road Vineyards

It was on a drizzly, gloomy afternoon when we alighted on Valley Road Vineyards after 4 hours on the road and the jovial vibe of this Afton, VA winery quickly boosted our morale. Opened in 2016 at the former location of a farmer’s market, Valley Road embraces its bucolic setting with plenty of outdoor seating from covered patios to a garden deck with lake views to its pastoral picnic grounds. And so we climbed out of our car and made a mad dash to the tasting room, snapping photos and dodging raindrops along the way. Now on to the best part – tasting!

We opted for both the Harvest Flight, which included 5 white wines and the On-the-Sweeter-Side Flight which has 2 white, 1 Rose, and 1 red. In the Harvest Flight this semi-sweet lover was easily won over by the Sauvignon Blanc 2021 with its grapefruity finish and the Destana 2020, a slighty bubbly citrus delight and the Mountain Glen White 2020, an off-dry similar to a Riesling. Side note – mead lovers should check out the Trillium 2019, a dessert wine with a rich honey flavor. The wines that won my heart in the On-the-Sweeter-Side Flight were the Mountain Glen Rose 2021, a semi-dry white wine with strawberry notes and the Mountain Glen Red 2020, a semi-dry red wine with notes of cherry.

In addition to serving up remarkable wines, Valley Road Vineyards also serves up plenty of fun with live music every Friday and a dog and child-friendly environment. Outside food is also allowed. After chilling for 2 hours, it was time to hit the road so we bid a reluctant goodbye to this cordial winery that had brightened up our gray day.
