Bold Rock Cidery

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

One of our most memorable experiences from this past summer was our road trip to Savannah, GA which included a required stop at Bold Rock Cidery in Nellysford, VA. From the front, the tasting room appears as a large red barn with a wooden boardwalk leading up to the entrance. Along the way we passed a sign assuring that everyone, including four-legged family members, were welcome at Bold Rock. (Noted for next time, Domino the Winery/Cidery dog!) Once inside the tasting room we were immediately bombarded by Bold Rock marketing, from t-shirts to bottle openers to all kinds of goodies and yes, we happily indulged. But despite the blatant commercialism, Bold Rock’s tasting room has a homey, wooden cabin vibe with high ceilings, large windows and decks offering up astonishing views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Onward then, to the tasting! First up was for us, an oldie but goodie as it is the only Bold Rock cider currently available in New Jersey – Bold Rock Apple. It’s sweet yet not tooth-rotting with a fruity finish. Next came my new personal favorite – Bold Rock Draft, which was less sweet than the Apple but more fruit forward. Vat No. 1 was on off-dry cider with Champagne qualities and boasts just enough bubbles to tickle your nose. The dry-hopped Bold Rock IPA had a surprising floral aroma and a slightly sweet finish. Last but not least was Bold Rock Rose a perfect combination of two things I hold dear – Rose wine and semi-sweet hard cider.

After ordering up a plate of delicious nachos, we took to the deck where we whiled away an enjoyable hour of just taking in the view. Alas, we still had a long way to drive so we reluctantly packed up our souvenirs and took to the road but not before vowing to one day return to this amazing treasure in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

What an absolutely stunning spot! A red barn-style winery, how cute? I think if I took my mum here she'd never want to leave :) Thanks for sharing.
