If you’re seeking a true drink-wine-by-the-vines experience, then look no further than Willow Creek Winery & Farm in West Cape May, NJ. Their outdoor patio is located just a few feet from the blossoming vineyards and is truly a dazzling sight to behold. Inside, the tasting room has a relaxing, intimate feel with cushy sofas and a stone hearth. Due to its touristy location, Willow Creek Winery’s prices run high and the food portions small, but our table service was friendly and efficient. Tasting flights range from $20 to $35 for 3 pours and after much debate, I opted for the Winemaker’s Choice Flight while my husband tried the Sweet Flight.
In this tasting expedition, the immediate standout was the Wild Cocke Prestige Rose both in color (white instead of the usual pink) as well as taste – more Riesling than Rose with a slight oak finish. Other memorable wines included the 2021 Pinot Gris with its melon notes, the Raspberry Merlot Blush and the Wilde Cock Cranberry Cabernet. Tasting complete, we ordered a bottle of the Wild Cocke Prestige Rose and relocated to the tent area where the free live music was just starting. This outdoor bar and tent area is a great option for walk-ins as it operates strictly on a first come, first served basis.
What I liked best about our visit to Willow Creek is that it offers an upscale experience without the snobbery. You can choose to make a reservation, which is the way to go if you want the vineyard-side patio locations, but it is not a requirement – you can always take your chances with the outdoor bar seating. Yes, they’re pricey but there is no cover charge for the music, they offer table service and we really enjoyed both the wine and the food. Best of all, our canine family members are welcome here too!
